Mangalore August 8th:An informative training on Role of College Student in Water Conservation for the students of St. Ann’s D.Ed. College, Mangalore was organized by DIET, KUIDFC- KUDCEMP and Pilikula Science Centre, Mangalore on August 02, 2008 at DIET, Mangalore.
Importance of Water, reasons for its depletion, various measures to raise the underground water level and methods of rain water harvesting were explained through slides by the resource person, Rev. Dr Ronald Cutinha, director of Samanvaya. Several success stories of water conservation were narrated. The contribution of an illiterate person Mr Shyamji Antala of Saurastra, the tireless efforts of Magsaysay Award winner Dr Rajendra Singh, in Rajastan and the meritorious activities of water specialist Dr Mekito Morepho (nick named as Dr Rain Water) of Japan were placed before the audience as an inspiration.
The students were given practical tips of water conservation in their homes and neighbourhood. The students resolved to conserve water by avoiding the wastage, by having percolation pits in their compounds, by planting trees and spreading the water literacy through articles and word of mouth. 62 students and teaching faculty participated in this training programme.
